Everything you want to know about SlowScreen, from scores to billing to privacy.

Scores & method

A 0-10 rating showing how calm and developmentally supportive a program is for its recommended viewing age. The higher the score, the more thoughtful and slower-paced the viewing for young children.

We review each program's content, language, pacing and audio. Pacing is measured objectively from the video itself (scene changes, volume), and that's combined with content quality into a single score. Every score is judged in relation to the recommended viewing age: that age is our reference point for deciding whether pacing, content, sensory load and developmental value are a good fit. A score is therefore age-dependent: content can be too stimulating at the recommended age, while being a great or even excellent fit for a child one year older.

Sensory calm, concentration & storyline, emotional safety, autonomy & problem-solving, language quality, and developmental value. Each is scored 0-10 with its own reasoning.

The stimulation label is the result of the Sensory Calm pillar. It shows how intense or stimulating a program feels for its recommended viewing age, on a scale from calming to overstimulating. It is measured objectively from pacing and audio, with no opinion involved, and stands separate from the program's quality.

Subscores are separate lenses next to the main score. They highlight specific aspects such as Representation & Diversity, Realism vs. Fantasy, and Parental Fun, without being folded into the overall score. The main score shows the overall developmental fit; the subscores help you see what fits your child, your values, and the way your family watches.

Age recommendation

Every series carries a recommended age, set by our editorial team, shown as "3+". The SlowScreen Score you see is the score at exactly that age, based on our own measurements of pacing, sensory load, language level and content safety. Next to it we show the youngest age that can safely watch along, derived from the safety checks alone. The recommendation comes from our own analysis rather than external ratings, while remembering that every child is different.

SlowScreen's recommendations start at age 1. For children under one, we do not offer screen guidance, because babies are still in a very early stage of sensory, emotional, and brain development. At this age, real-world connection, movement, touch, voice, and face-to-face interaction matter most. If your baby is nearby while an older sibling watches something, we recommend keeping the content calm, brief, and low in sensory intensity.

Platforms & content

All the major streaming services and video platforms, analyzed in the exact same way. No platform gets an easier or harder score.

Our catalog keeps growing and not every title is covered yet. If something's missing, you can ask us to analyse it: create a free account, tell us the title and where it streams, and we'll add it to the queue. We pick requests up as soon as we can, and you'll get an email the moment the analysis is live.

About SlowScreen

Traditional ratings focus on harmful content like violence or language. SlowScreen instead looks at how calm, slow-paced and developmentally supportive a program is for young children, a different question entirely.
