How it works

Our method

From screen to score

Every title earns its rating the same careful way.

1

We review it

Each episode is reviewed in full.

2

We weigh it

Six developmental pillars, judged against age-sensitive thresholds.

3

We score it

The SlowScreen Score combines all the pillars into one easy-to-understand score.

The SlowScreen Score

One number for developmental quality

The SlowScreen Score reflects how thoughtfully a program supports early development. It runs from 0 to 10 and is age-sensitive.

An example score

Every score is based on six pillars with the target age group in mind.

01

Sensory Calm

Does it let young eyes and ears rest? We look at pacing, sound, and visual density, and at tricks that grab attention by force. The result is the stimulation label, from calming to overstimulating.

02

Focus & Storyline

Is the story coherent and easy to follow, with room to focus, instead of constantly shifting direction?

03

Emotional Safety

Are conflict and big feelings handled with care and resolved calmly, rather than amped up for drama?

04

Autonomy & Problem Solving

Do characters think, try, and work things out? Or are solutions instant and handed to them?

05

Meaningful Language

Is the language rich and clear, the kind that grows vocabulary and understanding?

06

Developmental Value

Does it spark curiosity, creativity, or play that carries on beyond the screen?

Extra insights

More subjective and therefore not included in the overall score, but nonetheless very relevant for show selection.

Representation & Diversity

How fully the world on screen reflects the diversity of the real one.

Realism vs. Fantasy

Where a series sits between everyday life and pure imagination.

Parental Fun

How enjoyable is it for a grown-up watching along? Will you enjoy it yourself?

Age advice

Two ages, one honest answer

Every series carries a recommended age, set by our editors. The SlowScreen Score you see is the score at exactly that age, and next to it we show the youngest age that can watch along.

Recommended age: 3+

The recommended age

The age a series is made for, set editorially by our team. The SlowScreen Score you see is the score at this age: how well the series supports your child right there.

Co-watching from age 2

Co-watching

The youngest age that passes our checks on pacing, sensory load and scary content. Younger siblings in the room can watch along from this age, they just get less out of it.

A closer look

Inside the Sensory Calm pillar

Sensory Calm checks whether a show's pace and intensity fit the recommended age. The result is the stimulation label you see on every review.

Calming

Slow pace, soft sensory input. Ideal for winding down or focused attention.

Balanced

Pace and stimuli match the age group well.

Stimulating

At least one sensory dimension is more intense. Fine in moderation.

Overstimulating

Fast pace, frequent cuts. Can unsettle attention and calm.

It helps you match a title not just to what your child likes, but to what they can comfortably take in.

Made to help you choose the right content

Inspired by Montessori and developmental research, we help you see clearly so you can choose with confidence.
