Ten-year-old Ash Ketchum oversleeps on the day he should pick his first Pokemon, leaving only a stubborn Pikachu for him at Professor Oak's lab. Ash and Pikachu travel through countryside and forest, where Ash fails to catch a Pidgey, learns from the Pokedex that battles are needed, and runs into a flock of attacking Spearow. To save the wounded Pikachu, Ash takes a girl's bike, rides through a thunderstorm, and asks Pikachu to trust him; Pikachu fights back with a massive electric attack that drives the Spearow off. The episode closes with the new partners walking on together, followed by the Pokemon Rap and a 'TO BE CONTINUED' card.

Ash arrives in Viridian City with his unconscious Pikachu and is stopped by Officer Jenny, who then rushes him to the Pokémon Center where Nurse Joy and Chansey begin emergency treatment. While waiting, Ash video-calls his mother and Professor Oak, and an angry Misty turns up demanding payment for the bicycle he wrecked. Team Rocket's Jessie, James and Meowth then attack the Center to steal Pokémon, cutting the power and unleashing Ekans and Koffing, before a recovered Pikachu blasts them away with a massive electric attack. The episode closes with Ash and Misty heading toward Viridian Forest, a narrator cliffhanger, and a Pokérap listing dozens of Pokémon names.

Tale of the Headless Zombie

Zak, a boy shrunk down to insect size, and his friends Chower the caterpillar, Sid the snail and Willow the wasp investigate a 'headless zombie' haunting a foggy mushroom forest. It turns out the zombie is a caterpillar body that lost its head, and Willow ends up trapped inside it. Through a mix of plans, chases and luck the friends free Willow and reunite the body with its talking head. By the end Sid admits the 'top secret snail Society' was made up and that Chower is braver than he ever was.

Escape from the Treacherous Mountain

Teddy Ruxpin, a bear, and his friends Grubby and the inventor Newton Gimmick recover a hidden treasure of glowing crystals in a ruined city, then flee aboard Gimmick's airship. The villains Tweeg and L.B. and the Kang warriors chase and fire on the ship through a long battle over the mountains. The crew defends itself with slingshots and Grubby's sticky root stew, a woolly creature joins the fight, and Princess Aria is brought to safety. The episode ends with the group reaching home together.
