Brushing teeth

Brushing teeth is one of the first daily routines a child is asked to do every single day, whether they feel like it or not. It asks a lot of a small person: standing still, opening up, letting someone else near your mouth. A calm episode that shows brushing as an ordinary part of the day, done by characters a child recognises, can turn a nightly struggle into something familiar and predictable.

For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds want to do it themselves, and often want to decide when. This is the age of negotiating at the sink, so what helps most is seeing a character go through the whole sequence: wet the brush, brush, spit, rinse, put it back. Look for episodes that build brushing into a predictable evening rhythm, with an adult nearby who helps without taking over. A little grumbling from the character, resolved calmly, tells your child their own reluctance is nothing unusual.

Back home, Squacky is given a rocket night light as a reminder and settles down to sleep. The episode closes with a lullaby and a gentle narrator.

For 4-year-olds

By four, a child can hold the reason in mind: teeth need cleaning, sugar leaves something behind, the dentist checks how it is going. Curiosity arrives too, questions about wobbly teeth, what is inside a mouth, why grown-ups brush as well. Look for episodes that let a character work out the routine independently, with humour rather than warnings, and that treat a dentist visit as ordinary. At this age a story that gives brushing a small role inside a bigger family moment usually lands better than one built entirely around the sink.

Because Dad skipped the boring packing, the family has no floaties, goggles, sunscreen, towels or snacks, so he improvises to keep the girls happy and safe. Bingo grows increasingly bored, cold and hungry until Mum arrives with everything that was left behind. The day is saved and Dad admits that boring things are important sometimes.

When one of Dad's jokes goes too far, he apologizes and the two sides land on the difference between playing and teasing.
