Feeling

Anger

Anger is one of the first big feelings a child meets head on, and it arrives long before the words to explain it do. A story can show a child what anger looks like from the outside: what sets it off, what it does to a body, and what happens after it passes. Watching a character move through it, and still be loved on the other side, gives a child a map for their own storms.

For 2-year-olds

At two, anger is physical and total. A toddler cannot yet pause between feeling and doing, so frustration comes out as throwing, hitting the floor, or a wail that fills the room. What helps at this age is a story with a simple shape, few characters, and a grown-up who stays close without getting big themselves. Look for feelings that are named out loud in plain words, and for calm pacing so the story does not add to the noise.

Bea welcomes her new friend Megan to the treehouse, where they and Ty play as the superhero Magnificent Block Buddies in a colourful block-built neighbourhood. When Megan says Ty cannot be Super Zoom because of his skin colour, Ty is hurt and leaves, and the Kindness Club sets out to make things right. At his grandmother's home, Megan remembers being told she could not play because she is a girl and realises she made Ty feel the same way. She apologises, the friends talk about standing up when something is unfair, and everyone reunites to build the playset and share lunch.

For 3-year-olds

Three year olds start to put a word on the feeling, though the word usually arrives after the storm rather than before it. Fairness matters intensely now: whose turn, whose toy, who went first. Stories that let a character be openly angry and then show the repair, coming back, saying sorry, playing again, teach that anger does not end a relationship. Watch for adults who stay steady instead of scolding, and for problems small enough to recognise from a real day.

In Storybook Village, Red has eaten one of Peter Piper's pickled peppers without asking, and Peter is upset. Wyatt and his friends transform into the Super Readers, Super Why, Wonder Red, Alpha Pig, and Princess Presto, and jump into the Hansel and Gretel book to find an answer. They follow the alphabet, spell the word 'raft' to cross a stream, and change words in the story to talk with the witch, who is angry her gingerbread house was eaten. The lesson they find is to 'ask first', so Red returns to apologise to Peter and ask for a pepper, and the friends celebrate.

For 4-year-olds

By four, anger gets tangled up with friendship. A child this age is beginning to notice that other people have feelings too, and that their own outburst can hurt someone. That awareness is new and shaky. Look for stories where the conflict happens between friends or siblings, where nobody is simply the bad one, and where the aftermath gets screen time. Seeing a character sit with an awkward moment before making it right is more useful here than a fast fix.

The family shares Christmas dinner and Peter is given his late father's adventure journal to fill with his own.

For 5-year-olds

Five year olds can hold a plan in mind while upset, which means anger becomes something they can start to steer. They also feel unfairness sharply: being left out, losing a game, being told no by someone with more power. Stories with a longer arc suit this age, where a character makes a choice in the heat of the moment and lives with the result. Useful to look for is anger treated as information about something that matters, not just as bad behaviour.

For 6-year-olds

At six, anger often comes with a reason a child can argue for: something was unjust, a friend broke a promise, nobody listened. They can also look back afterwards and reconsider. Stories can carry more weight now, with disagreements that take a while to settle and characters who are both angry and right, or angry and wrong. What matters is that the feeling is taken seriously rather than smoothed over, and that friendships survive the argument.
