Behaviour

Admitting mistakes

Every child spills something, breaks something, or does the exact thing they were told not to do. Saying so out loud is the hard part, because it asks a child to risk disappointing someone they love. Stories where characters own up, and are met calmly, give children a picture of how that goes before they have to do it themselves.

For 2-year-olds

At two, a mistake is mostly a surprise. The cup tips, the tower falls, and your child watches your face to learn what it means. Accident and on purpose are not yet separate ideas, so what registers is the tone around the moment rather than any explanation. Look for episodes where something small goes wrong and the reaction stays warm, where the mess gets cleaned up together and the story moves on without a lesson attached.

Three is when hiding starts. Your child now knows a rule was broken and may say it was not them, go quiet, or point at someone else.
