Apologising

Saying sorry is one of the first repair tools a child learns, and it takes years to grow from a copied word into a real understanding that someone else feels hurt. Young children need to see the whole picture: the mistake, the upset it caused, and the moment things are put right again. A calm, well-made story gives them that arc at a pace they can follow, without shame and without a lecture.

For 2-year-olds

At two, sorry is mostly a sound a child repeats because a grown-up asked for it. What lands instead is the feeling in the room: a friend crying, a toy taken back, a hug that makes things comfortable again. Look for short, quiet moments where an adult names what happened in a few plain words and stays warm about it. Stories that show comfort after an upset teach more here than any apology scene.

For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds begin to notice that their own hands caused the tears, and that recognition can feel heavy. Many resist a demanded apology while still wanting to fix things, often by handing something over or fetching a grown-up. Adults who stay calm and never shame the child make the moment safe enough to try again.

For 4-year-olds

By four, children can hold the difference between an accident and doing something on purpose, and they care a lot about that difference.
