Riding
Riding covers everything a child climbs onto and moves with: a pony, a bike, a scooter, a train, a truck. For young children it is one of the first places where their own body decides the speed and direction, which is thrilling and a little frightening at the same time. A calm, well made story about riding lets them rehearse that feeling from the safety of the couch, watching someone else wobble, hold on, and try again.
For 2-year-olds
At two, riding is mostly something that happens to a child rather than something they steer. They are carried, pushed, or sat on top of something bigger and learn what movement feels like in their body. Look for stories that stay with one simple action at a time, with steady images and clear naming of what is happening, so the child can follow the motion without being rushed. Familiar sounds and repeated journeys help the youngest children know what comes next.

Barney the purple dinosaur and his friends play a colour-light game in a sunny park that turns into a glowing play space, where each new colour signals a new action. Throughout, Barney models noticing his body's signals and taking breaks for water, rest and snacks. Mel keeps trying to master Billy's jump, grows frustrated, then learns to rest and check in with her body. She finally lands the trick, and the group heads off for dinner.
For 3-year-olds
Three year olds want to be the one in the saddle or on the seat. Pushing off, steering, and stopping are real work at this age, and falling over is part of it. Stories help most when the trying is shown honestly and the frustration is allowed to exist before it is solved. Watch for calm adults or older friends who stay nearby without taking over, and for a simple loop of attempt, wobble, and another go that a child can recognise from their own day.

For 4-year-olds
By four, riding becomes social. There are turns to take, helmets to fasten, and someone else who wants the same bike or the same pony. Children this age are also starting to grasp that skill comes from practice, not from wanting it hard enough. Look for stories where a ride has a purpose, going somewhere, fetching something, helping a friend, and where the rules around it are shown as sensible rather than as scolding. Effort that pays off slowly is more useful here than instant success.

For 5-year-olds
Five year olds can hold a longer journey in their heads and enjoy the idea of setting out and coming back. If an animal is involved, this is the age where caring for it matters as much as sitting on it: feeding, brushing, noticing when it is tired or scared. Look for stories with a bit more plot, where riders plan together and adjust when something goes wrong. A little tension is fine now, as long as the resolution is clear and the animals and children are treated kindly.
