Guessing

Guessing is one of the first ways children think out loud. They notice a clue, hold it in mind, and risk an answer before knowing whether it is right. A calm series built around guessing gives a child time to actually think, a real pause to answer, and a reveal that rewards the try as much as the correct word.

For 2-year-olds

At two, guessing is mostly recognising. A child sees a shape, a shadow, or half of something familiar and says the name out loud, often before the answer appears. Getting it right is a genuine thrill at this age. Look for a slow reveal, one thing at a time, and a clear pause that leaves room to call out. The hidden thing should come from daily life: a shoe, an apple, a cat.

Back in the book, the friends recap what was found and say their goodbyes.

For 3-year-olds

Three is when guessing becomes a game with rules. A child can hold a clue in mind, wait, and try an answer, and can handle being wrong without losing interest. Look for clues offered one by one and repeated, so a child who missed the first still gets a way in. A steady pattern helps: a clue, a pause, a guess, a reveal, in that order every time.

Mummy suggests they each reveal one item at the same time, so the children show a trumpet and a drum. George also has a custard donut, and the family ends by sharing donuts together.

For 4-year-olds

By four a child can put two clues together instead of grabbing at the first one. It has fur and it climbs, so it is not a fish. Explaining the guess starts to matter as much as making it, so it helps when a character asks why the child thinks so. Look for clues that need combining, and answers that get checked out loud rather than simply announced.

Five year olds guess forward. Before any answer arrives they will predict what happens next, what is inside, or what an animal eats, and they want to find out whether they were right. Look for a series that asks the question first and explains only afterwards, so the guess genuinely belongs to the child. Being wrong should land softly, treated as new information instead of a mistake.

Look for content that invites a guess, tests it, and shows the thinking behind the outcome, including the moments when a first idea does not hold up. Questions with more than one plausible answer keep a six year old thinking instead of just scoring points.
