Hygiene

Hygiene is everything around keeping a body clean and comfortable: washing hands, brushing teeth, bathing, blowing a nose, cleaning up after a mess. For young children these are daily routines they are still learning, and they often come with resistance or worry. A calm series can show these moments as ordinary and doable, giving a child words and a picture of what happens before it happens to them.

For 3-year-olds

At three, a child is starting to manage parts of these routines alone, washing hands, wiping a face, helping with the toothbrush, but still needs an adult nearby for most of it. Watching a character go through the same steps makes the routine predictable, and predictable is what makes it easier to accept. Look for a series that shows the whole sequence at an unhurried pace, with a warm adult helping rather than commanding. Stories where getting dirty is part of the fun and washing up is simply what comes next work especially well at this age, because they take the shame out of a messy day.
