Persuading

Persuading is how children learn to get what they want with words instead of grabbing, whining or giving up. It covers making a case, offering a reason, negotiating a trade and accepting a no. A calm, well-made series can show this happening step by step, so a child sees what a good argument sounds like and how it feels to be on the receiving end.

For 4-year-olds

At four, persuading is mostly still asking, and the reason a child gives is usually the one that matters to them alone. This is the age where 'because I want to' slowly becomes 'because it will be more fun with two'. Look for a series where characters explain their thinking out loud and where the other side actually answers, rather than simply agreeing. It helps when curiosity drives the convincing, one character wanting to try something and talking a friend into joining, because the child hears a reason attached to a wish.

Pinkalicious brings Goldie, her imaginary pet unicorn, to school for the day. Across math, reading, snack, art and recess, Goldie keeps breaking school rules, eating an apple early, dancing during reading, calling out answers and roller-skating in the hallway. Her teacher Ms. Penny and Vice Principal Crunk warn that Goldie may have to go home. Pinkalicious realizes that pretending they are in 'princess school,' the game they play at home, helps Goldie follow the rules, and both earn gold stars for good behavior.

Sid is a young boy who collects science tools and cannot decide which is his favorite: his magnifying glass, estimation jar, chart or ruler. He brings the magnifying glass to school, where teacher Susie and his friends explore each tool through hands-on investigations, from magnifying tiny bugs to estimating balls in a jar and measuring the classroom with their bodies. Real children appear in short clips trying the same activities themselves. By bedtime Sid decides he likes all of his science tools equally.
