Riding

Riding covers everything with wheels and pedals: bikes, scooters, cars, trains, planes and the trips they make. Small children are drawn to it because movement is something they are learning in their own bodies, and watching it on screen lets them study how it works. A calm series about riding gives them time to see where a journey starts, what happens along the way, and where it ends.

For 3-year-olds

By three, the journey starts to matter more than the vehicle. Children this age can follow a simple route from home to somewhere else, notice who is coming along, and understand that a trip has a reason behind it. They also meet real questions here: taking turns on a scooter, waiting, or falling off and getting back on. Look for stories that stay small and everyday, keep the pace unhurried, and let the child work out the problem rather than rushing to the destination.

On a sunny day Peppa, George and their friends ride bikes near Daddy Pig's garden, where he is proud of the large pumpkin he has grown. After friends point out that her bike still has stabilisers, Peppa asks Daddy Pig to take them off and practises until she can ride on her own. Excited by her new skill, she races off without looking and squashes the pumpkin. Daddy Pig reassures her that she matters more than the pumpkin, then turns it into enough pumpkin pie for everyone.

After a discouraging fall, she asks her older brother Bernard for help, and he teaches her in stages, first balancing, then steering, then pedalling. She practises, wobbles, and falls again, but keeps going until she can ride to the park and show her friends. The episode ends with the reminder that everyone learns at their own pace.
