Teasing

Teasing sits right on the line between play and hurt, and young children spend years learning where that line is. They tease, they get teased, and they watch other people do it, often before they have the words to explain how any of it felt. A calm, clearly told story gives them a safe place to see the whole sequence: the joke, the sting, the repair.

For 2-year-olds

At two, teasing is not yet a plan. Your child might repeat a word that got a big reaction, or grab something and laugh, without connecting that to another person's upset face. What helps at this age is a story that keeps the moment small and slow: one clear action, one clear feeling on someone's face, and a quick, visible repair. Simple language and unhurried images matter more than any lesson about kindness.

For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds start testing reactions on purpose. A silly name or a taken toy is often an experiment in what happens next, and the laughter of a friend can make it worth repeating. Look for stories that separate laughing together from laughing at someone, and show it plainly rather than explaining it. It also helps when a character says out loud that they did not like it, because your child is only just learning that other people have an inside view.

Instead of being upset, Triangle is thrilled and declares their prank war will never end.

For 4-year-olds

By four, children understand intent. They know when teasing was meant to sting, and they feel it sharply when they are the target, especially inside a friendship that matters to them. Useful stories here let the teased character name the feeling and be genuinely heard, instead of being told to shrug it off. Watch for characters who apologise in their own words and stay friends afterwards, since that is the part your child will practise on the playground.

Bingo's favourite toy ends up 'stuck', until the kids tickle Dad to make him let it go. The game wraps up with ice cream and Dad's joke about whether anyone learned a lesson.

For 5-year-olds

At five, teasing turns social. It happens in groups, it decides who is in and who is left out, and your child is often the third person watching rather than the one involved. Stories that show a bystander choosing to speak up, or quietly staying beside the person being teased, give them a script they can actually use. Endings that leave a little discomfort are fine at this age, as long as the story shows someone trying.

For 6-year-olds

Six-year-olds notice patterns: the nickname that keeps coming back, the friend who is funny until they are not. They can hold two ideas at once, that a joke was clever and still unkind, and they start wondering why someone teases at all. Stories with room for that complexity work well, including characters who tease out of jealousy or their own insecurity. Look for ones where the person on the receiving end sets a limit themselves, rather than waiting for an adult.
