Ash arrives in Pewter City with Pikachu and Misty and challenges Brock, the local gym leader, for his first official badge. After Pikachu is easily beaten by Brock's Onix, an old man named Flint helps Ash train at a riverside hydroelectric plant. In the rematch, sprinklers accidentally weaken Onix and Brock stops the fight; he later hands Ash the Boulder Badge anyway and joins the journey, while Flint reveals he is Brock's missing father. Challenge of the Samurai

In Viridian Forest, Ash and Misty meet Samurai, a self-proclaimed expert trainer who has been waiting to challenge anyone from Pallet Town to a Pokémon match. Their battle stretches into a long Metapod versus Metapod standoff until a Beedrill swarm, summoned by a Weedle Ash failed to catch, drives everyone to flee. Ash leaves Metapod behind in the panic, then returns to apologise, and Metapod evolves into Butterfree just in time to put the Beedrill to sleep. The episode closes with Samurai pointing the way to Pewter City and a Poké Rap montage of collectible Pokémon names.

Ash Catches a Pokémon

Ash, Misty, and Pikachu travel through Viridian Forest where Ash catches his very first Pokémon, a Caterpie. Misty is grossed out by the bug and the three argue about it while continuing through the woods, where Ash also captures a Pidgeotto after Misty teaches him to battle and weaken a wild Pokémon first. Team Rocket then ambushes the group to steal Pikachu, but Caterpie defeats their Ekans and Koffing with a String Shot, and the trio celebrates as Caterpie evolves into Metapod. The episode closes with a narrator teasing a dangerous new challenge ahead and a Poké Rap segment listing dozens of Pokémon names.
