Everyday life

Everyday life is the world your child already knows: getting dressed, going to the shop, sharing a snack, a small argument with a friend. A series that stays close to these ordinary moments gives children a chance to recognise themselves and to see how the day fits together. When the pace is calm and the situations are real, watching becomes a quiet way of making sense of daily routines.

For 2-year-olds

At two, daily life is mostly about repetition and recognition. Your child is learning the shape of a routine: shoes come before the door, hands get washed after eating. A good series at this age moves slowly, stays with one simple activity at a time, and names things clearly so your toddler can point and repeat. Look for familiar objects and rooms, few characters, and plenty of space between words.

For 4-year-olds

By four, the interesting part of everyday life is other people: taking turns, fairness, disappointment, and how grown-ups react. Your child can follow a longer story and hold a character's feelings in mind. Look for episodes where family members talk things through, where a child's idea is taken seriously, and where mistakes get named instead of glossed over. These are the ones that carry into your child's own play afterwards.

Bluey doesn't want to go to bed and wishes she could be a nocturnal fruit bat instead. Her parents move her through rocket ship play, a penguin bath, a bedtime story and lights out, while Mum sits beside her and suggests she try dreaming about being a fruit bat. Bluey then dreams of meeting her dad as a fruit bat on a football field, watching him score a try. She wakes the next morning, tells Mum about her dream, and asks for toast instead of fruit salad.

Dad takes Bluey and Bingo to the Golden Crown takeaway to pick up dinner, but Mum has forgotten the spring rolls, so the family has to wait. To pass the time the girls invent a string of games, running a pretend restaurant, becoming 'Tap Girl', and flooding the floor with the water tap while Dad tries to read the newspaper and answer their endless questions. After many rounds of 'five more minutes' and a plate of fortune cookies, the spring rolls are finally ready. The family collects the food and heads home for shower time.
