Peer pressure

Peer pressure is what happens when a child does something because other children are doing it, or because saying no might cost them a playmate. For young children this starts small, with copying a friend's silly game or handing over a toy to keep the peace. A calm, well made series can show these moments slowly enough that a child sees the choice being made, and hears what it sounds like to speak up.

For 4-year-olds

Four is when friendship starts being used as leverage. Children hear their first versions of 'then you can't play with me', and the sting of that is real. Stories at this age help most when a character says no, or says yes and regrets it, and the friendship survives either way. Look for clear cause and effect, a short repair after the wobble, and characters who name what they wanted instead of only what the group wanted.

Simon, a young rabbit, sees his friend Ferdinand riding a bike without training wheels and decides he wants the same. After Dad removes the stabilizers at home, Simon tries again and again, falling and crying but always getting back up while Dad steadies the bike and offers encouragement. That night Simon wakes Dad for one more try, hears the tip to look straight ahead instead of down, and finally rides on his own. The episode ends with Simon laughing about Ferdinand's earlier doubt.

Farmer Ben explains, using chickens and sheep, why following the crowd is a mistake. Brother takes the lesson to heart, refuses the next round of dares, and returns Sister's rope.

Bluey, her little sister Bingo and their friend Judo play a game of butterflies in the backyard while Dad hangs a swing and Mum takes in the washing. Judo is bossy and the two older girls sneak away from Bingo because she is slow, leaving her alone. Bluey feels bad, goes to find Bingo, and apologizes for running off. The three agree on a new rule that no one runs away from anyone and go back to playing together.

For 6-year-olds

By six, children track reputation. Being called babyish, being the only one who did not join in, or defending a friend the group has turned on are all live concerns. This is the age for stories where the group is not straightforwardly wrong and the choice is genuinely hard. Look for characters with their own reasoning, room for a child to disagree with a friend and stay close, and endings that leave something to talk about afterwards.
