Protecting others

Protecting others starts small: noticing that someone is upset, sad or in trouble, and doing something about it. For young children this is one of the first ways they learn that their actions matter to other people. A calm, well-made story about looking after someone gives a child the whole shape of that feeling, the worry, the helping, the relief, at a pace they can actually follow.

For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds are starting to grasp that another person can feel differently than they do, which is the ground protecting grows from. They try out small guarding acts: warning someone, fetching a grown-up, staying close to someone smaller. Look for stories where a child or animal notices trouble and acts, with an adult nearby but not taking over. The situation should stay clearly harmless, so the feeling of caring is not overshadowed by real fear.

For 4-year-olds

Four is the age of fairness. Children now understand rules and notice when someone is treated badly, and they often want to step in. Stories at this stage can carry a bit more tension: someone genuinely needs help, and the way out is talking, fetching help, or standing beside a friend rather than fighting. Look for problems solved with words and cooperation, and for a clear ending where everyone is safe and the worry is fully released.

She returns to the Zambam River, shares her adventures, and the other hippos welcome her back with a big splash.

Two sisters and their young cousin turn the living room into a pretend office where they make drain pipes for pay. Bluey plays the boss and grows increasingly bossy, ordering her workers to be her chair and clean with their bottoms, and firing the cousin's frog character for dancing. Outside, the frog keeps dancing and is spotted by a famous ballerina named Pavlova, who invites Bingo's rabbit to perform. The game ends with a dance on a glowing theatre stage.
