Standing up to bullies

Standing up to bullies is really about a child learning that unkind treatment is not something they have to accept quietly. Long before they know the word bullying, young children meet grabbing, teasing and being left out of play, and they need words and examples for what to do next. A calm, clearly told story gives them a safe place to see someone speak up, ask for help, and be treated better afterwards.

For 4-year-olds

By four, teasing and being shut out of play start to sting in a new way, because your child now understands that it was meant. This is the age for seeing a character speak up for themselves and for a friend, and for learning that telling an adult is help, not tattling. Look for stories that show the moment of standing up clearly, followed by a repair, so the message is not just that meanness happens.

A young llama and his classmates spend a school day at the playground where Gilroy Goat keeps pushing, teasing and grabbing a friend's bow. At bedtime Mama Llama coaches Llama on how to stand up to a mean friend and when to tell a teacher. The next day the friends tell Gilroy to stop, Zelda Zebra steps in, and Gilroy apologises. Everyone makes up and plays tag, and the episode ends with show-and-tell and a chat at home.

After ruling out the pets and finding her parents too busy, she reluctantly chooses her brother, whose tenth birthday is the next day, and films him with Papa's camera. While recording, she discovers his skill at sports, his patience, and the moment he stands up to a bully called Too Tall to recover her ribbon. At the birthday party she gives him the finished movie titled 'My Hero', and the family agrees that showing how you feel can be the greatest gift of all.

On Halloween night, the bear cubs Brother and Sister plan their trick-or-treat route but decide to skip Witter Jones' house because they believe she is a witch who turns cubs into statues. Mama insists she is a kind neighbor from her quilting class, so the cubs eventually knock, cross paths with the Too-Tall gang who came to cause trouble, and briefly think their friends have been enchanted. They discover Witter Jones is warm and playful, hands out candy apples, and turns her spooky tricks on the bullies. The family ends the night at home, with Papa heading back out for a candy apple of his own.

Mighty Milton

A new cub named Milton Chubb arrives at school and on Farmer Ben's farm, and Too Tall's gang teases him for being clumsy at every sport. Brother befriends him, realises Milton is strong at wrestling and farm work, and arranges a tryout where Milton pins Too Tall using a move he calls 'the pancake.' Too Tall apologises and the team welcomes Milton. The episode closes on the cubs cheering him as 'Mighty Milton.'

For 6-year-olds

At six, a child can hold the idea of repeated, targeted unkindness and think about what they would do. They are ready for stories with real stakes, where a bystander decides to step in, or where standing up costs something before it works. Talk afterwards about who helped and why. Look for endings that show consequences and repair honestly, without turning the unkind character into a simple villain your child cannot recognise in daily life.

The Gecko Effect

Chris and Martin Kratt set out to discover how a gecko climbs on smooth surfaces. After a failed suction-cup experiment, they miniaturise themselves to study a Tokay gecko's toe pads up close and learn about microscopic electrostatic hairs. Meanwhile, the villain Zach Varmitech steals their miniaturiser and traps the team, who escape by using their new gecko powers to climb out. The episode ends with the inventions reclaimed and the brothers naming the gecko 'Okay'.
