Adoption & foster care

Adoption and foster care are about how families form, and about the adults who choose to care for a child they did not give birth to. Young children meet these ideas early, through a friend at daycare, a cousin, or their own story. A calm, well-made series gives them words for it, and shows that being cared for and belonging somewhere can start in more than one way.

For 4-year-olds

At four, a child understands family as the people who feed them, comfort them and put them to bed. The idea that a child can arrive in a family later, rather than being born into it, is new but not confusing at this age, as long as it is shown plainly. Look for stories where a little one is carried, welcomed and settled in, with the caring adult clearly staying. Warmth and a soft ending matter more than explanation here, and any goodbye should be brief and followed by comfort.
