First day at childcare

A first day at childcare is one of the biggest changes a small child goes through: a new room, new grown-ups, and a goodbye that has to be survived before the reunion comes. A calm series about it lets your child rehearse that whole arc from the safety of your lap, seeing the drop-off, the day in between, and the pick-up that always follows. Watching it together also gives you words for something your child may not yet be able to explain.

For 2-year-olds

At two, the hard part is the goodbye itself. Your child is still learning that you continue to exist when you walk out the door, and that missing you does not mean being left. Look for something slow and repetitive, where the same drop-off and the same reunion come back in a predictable order, and where the feelings stay simple: sad, then okay again. Short scenes with familiar things, a coat hook, a bag, a wave through the window, give your child something concrete to hold on to.

For 3-year-olds

At three, a child can hold the shape of a whole day in mind, so the questions get bigger: what happens in between, who will be there, will anyone play with me. Stories with a clear beginning, middle and end help here, especially ones that follow a character through arriving, finding something to do, and being collected again. Some worry or a wobbly moment is useful at this age, as long as it settles. This is also when the social side starts to matter, so a story that includes joining a group or making a first friend gives your child something to try out.
