For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds start asking what made the noise, and knowing the cause takes much of the sting out of it. This is the age of the loud machine, the loud animal, the loud siren with a job to do. A story helps most when it shows the source plainly and lets the character look at it, stay back, or come closer at their own pace. Watch for noise treated as ordinary and explainable, rather than as a punchline or a scare.

For 5-year-olds

By five, a child can think ahead: fireworks are coming, the drill will be loud, the party will get noisy. That opens the door to strategies. Useful stories let the character notice the feeling, say it out loud, and do something practical about it, covering ears, moving away, asking for warning. Look for a character who keeps some control over the situation instead of simply being rescued, and for other characters who take the discomfort seriously.
