Packing for school

Packing a bag for school is one of the first routines a child gets to own. It bundles several things at once: remembering what is needed, handling the rush of the morning, and saying goodbye at the door. A calm, clearly told story about it lets children rehearse the whole sequence at their own speed, long before they are standing in the hallway with a coat half on.

For 5-year-olds

By five, packing shifts from following along to thinking ahead: gym clothes on the right day, something to bring for sharing, a jacket because the sky looked grey. Children this age enjoy checking and checking again, and they take real pride in a bag they filled alone. Look for stories where some of the planning happens the evening before, and where a forgotten item turns into a solvable problem rather than a disaster.
