Pushing boundaries
Pushing boundaries is how young children find out where the edges are: what happens if they say no, climb higher, or keep going after being asked to stop. It looks like defiance, but most of it is research. A calm, well-made story about it lets a child watch someone else test a limit, feel the wobble, and see that the limit and the relationship both hold.
For 2-year-olds
At two, limits are discovered with the whole body. Your child grabs, climbs, and says no long before they can explain why, and being stopped can tip straight into a big feeling. At this age look for very simple moments: one small refusal, an adult who stays warm and does not raise their voice, and a quick return to play. What matters most is seeing that the upset passes and nobody is left alone with it.

For 3-year-olds
Three-year-olds test limits on purpose and watch your face while doing it. They now understand a rule well enough to try it from another angle, and the word no arrives with real conviction. Helpful stories keep the limit steady while naming the feeling underneath, so pushing back does not become a fight. Look for characters who protest, hear a clear reason, and stay connected to the grown-up who held the line.

For 4-year-olds
By four, the pushing moves into words. Children argue, negotiate, ask why the rule exists, and bend agreements with friends to suit themselves. Fairness starts to matter intensely, especially when it is unfair to them. At this stage look for stories where someone genuinely oversteps, notices the effect on another child, and puts it right themselves. Seeing a character repair something they broke is far more useful now than seeing them obey.

For 6-year-olds
Six-year-olds test their own limits as much as anyone else's. They want to go further from home, take a physical risk, question whether an adult is right, and work out which rules they actually agree with. Look for stories that give children room to make their own plans and let mistakes carry real weight, without punishment being the point. A friendship that survives a genuine disagreement is worth more here than a tidy lesson.
