Bug hunting

Bug hunting is the everyday science of turning over a stone, watching an ant carry a crumb, or following a beetle across a path. For young children it is often their first real investigation: looking closely, wondering out loud, and finding out that tiny creatures live whole lives right next to theirs. A calm, well made series about bug hunting keeps that curiosity going and gives children words for what they notice, without making small creatures frightening.

For 4-year-olds

Four year olds want to know why. They start asking where an insect lives, what it eats, and what happens if it rains, and they can hold a simple question in mind long enough to look for the answer. A good series at this age models that: someone wonders something, goes to look, and talks through what they found. Watch for stories that show care for living things, putting the creature back where it was found, and that leave room for a child to guess before the answer arrives.

Sid wants to know how his tiny pet roly-polies move, so he brings them to school to investigate with his friends. Teacher Susie introduces the magnifying glass as a science tool, and the class uses it to look closely at skin, crayons, and the bugs themselves. Sid discovers that roly-polies walk on fourteen little legs and records his findings in a journal. He reports back to his dad during a backyard bug hunt and ends the day imagining a hat full of magnifying glasses.
