Visiting a friend

Going to someone else's house is one of a young child's first steps into a world with different rules, different toys and a grown-up who is not their own. Series that follow a visit from doorstep to goodbye give children a quiet rehearsal of how it goes: arriving, playing together, sharing, and leaving again. Watching it happen on screen makes the real thing feel a little more familiar.

For 2-year-olds

At two, a visit is mostly about the parent staying close and the toys being interesting. Children this age play beside each other more than with each other, and handing something over is genuinely hard. Look for a series that keeps the visit small and predictable, with one friend, one room and a clear arrival and goodbye. Simple words, a calm pace and a familiar routine help a toddler follow what is happening without needing to grasp the social rules yet.

Bing is excited to watch fireworks from his garden with Flop, while friends Pando, Coco and Charlie play nearby. Sula arrives wearing earmuffs because she does not like the bangs, and Bing insists he is brave enough to go outside. When a huge rocket bangs overhead Bing races back in and hides under the kitchen table, upset by the noise. Flop adapts a pair of oven mitts into 'ear gloves' so Bing can step back to the window and enjoy the rest of the fireworks safely, and Bing recaps the lesson to the viewer at the end.

Miffy's and Aggie's Teddy Bears

Miffy invites her friend Aggie for a sleepover, and Aggie arrives with a hand-drawn gift and a teddy bear that looks almost identical to Miffy's. After a family dinner the two bunnies go to bed, but Aggie cannot fall asleep because she is holding the wrong bear. Together they realise that each teddy has its own smell, swap the bears back, and both fall peacefully asleep. The episode closes with end-card prompts to subscribe and watch another video.

Miffy invites her friend Aggie, who arrives with an accordion, and mother bunny phones Poppy Pig, who walks up the hill with her double bass and her little niece Grunty. The four of them then play a piece together as a quartet, after which the video ends with a short teaser of the next episode and an end screen.

Boris pulls her home in her new wagon and the episode closes with a brief river scene featuring another character and a credits screen.

For 3-year-olds

By three, the visit itself becomes the point. Children start choosing who they want to play with, invent games together, and run into the friction that comes with it: whose turn, whose toy, whose idea. Series that let a small disagreement happen and then be repaired are useful here, because they show that a bumpy moment does not end the friendship. Room for imaginative play and a friend with their own wishes match what a three-year-old is practising.

The next day Gaston will not come out, so they ask Nanny Plum for help and visit his cave. The friends realise Gaston loved his home just as it was, and they happily put back the cobwebs, smelly socks and dirt before running off to play again.

Sarah hunts through rooms of wool, meets a colourful leftover wool character and rides a woolly slide while looking for a scarf to warm Duck's neck. Scarf Lady sits and knits, explaining how scarves, jumpers and hats are made. At the end, she presents Duck with a knitted pair of pants and a woolly sea cow, leaving him 'toasty' for the rest of the afternoon.

A Present for Mother Bear

Little Bear, a young cub, decides he wants to give his mother a special present. He sets off through the forest and visits his friends Hen, Owl, Duck and Cat, gathering ideas and picking wildflowers along the way. Back at the cottage, the friends come together for a celebration with music in Mother Bear's honour. Little Bear hands her a large bouquet and she gathers him into a warm hug.
