Behaviour
Bravery
Bravery for a young child rarely looks heroic. It looks like walking into a new room, telling a friend the truth, or trying something after the first attempt went badly. Shows built around these small moments give children a language for their own hesitation, and a picture of what it looks like to go ahead anyway.
For 2-year-olds
At two, courage is mostly about separation and surprise: leaving your side, a loud noise, an unfamiliar face. A toddler cannot yet talk himself through fear, so he borrows calm from the people around him. Look for stories where a character hesitates, gets a steady response, and then carries on, all at a pace slow enough to follow. Big rescues or high stakes will read as tension, not encouragement.
For 3-year-olds
Three-year-olds are starting to name feelings, and 'I'm scared' becomes something they can actually say. This is the age where being brave and being frightened stop feeling like opposites. Helpful stories show the wobble openly, then a small step taken with a friend or grown-up nearby. Watch that the frightening part stays brief and that comfort arrives quickly, because at this age a scary image lingers long after the episode ends.

For 4-year-olds
By four, courage widens beyond fear into effort: trying the hard thing, admitting a mistake, going first. Children this age understand that a character can want to do something and dread it at the same time. Stories that show the deciding moment, not just the triumphant outcome, are the useful ones. A little more tension is manageable now, as long as the child character stays in the driver's seat rather than being rescued.

For 5-year-olds
Five-year-olds care about being seen as capable, which makes them cautious about anything they might fail at in front of others. Bravery here often means risking looking silly. Look for stories where a character speaks up, sticks with a task, or stands beside someone unpopular, and where the reward is internal rather than applause. Adventure plots work well at this age if the danger stays clearly imaginary and the resolution is earned by thinking, not luck.

For 6-year-olds
At six, children can hold moral weight: doing the right thing when it costs something, or being honest when a lie would be easier. They notice when a character is only pretending not to be afraid. Stories with genuine consequences, a friendship strained, a plan that fails, give them something to chew on. The best ones let a child character work through the fear with reasoning and the support of friends, rather than simply being fearless from the start.
