Brushing teeth

Brushing teeth is one of the first daily routines a child is asked to repeat twice a day, every day, whether they feel like it or not. For many young children it involves a strange texture in the mouth, a grown-up hovering close, and being asked to stand still. A calm episode about it gives children a chance to see the routine from the outside, at their own speed, so the bathroom feels familiar instead of like a struggle.

For 2-year-olds

At two, brushing is mostly something that happens to a child rather than something they do. The toothbrush feels odd, the timing is decided by someone else, and refusing is a normal way of testing what happens next. Look for episodes that keep the routine simple and repeat it in the same order, with a song or a phrase that returns, so the sequence becomes predictable. Warm, unhurried adults who help without pushing matter more here than any lesson about teeth.

For 3-year-olds

By three, a child wants to hold the brush, choose the moment, and hear why it needs to happen at all. Resistance is often about control rather than the brushing itself. Episodes that work at this age show a character feeling reluctant, name that feeling out loud, and then move through the routine anyway with a small piece of it left to the child. A little humour and a clear beginning and end help, and it is worth watching for stories that treat the dentist or a wobbly tooth as ordinary rather than something to be nervous about.

Jessica, a young girl, decides she wants to do her whole bedtime routine, put on her bonnet, brush her teeth and use the potty, all by herself like her big brother Bernard. She keeps forgetting steps, gets frustrated, and finally asks Bernard for help, who suggests she come up with a strategy. She invents a memory song and manages all three steps in order, though she leaves a splashy mess to clean up. The story takes place at home with her mother and two brothers.

On a countryside farm, sisters Jill and Jackie prepare their animals for a special farm family photo before baby Josh falls asleep. Jill works through one small hitch after another, leading wandering goats with carrots, cleaning dusty chickens and making the pony Pickle a straw bow so she feels included. The whole household, animals and all, finally gathers for the picture, and the family tells Jill she brought everyone together. The episode closes with a gentle goodbye as two sheep leave for the fields and grandfather Jamma announces he is moving in.
