Jumping

Jumping is one of the first big movements a child masters on their own: two feet leaving the ground at the same time, then landing. It takes balance, leg strength and a bit of courage, and it usually arrives with a lot of laughing. A calm, well made episode about jumping gives children the words for what their body is doing, and often gets them off the couch to try it themselves.

For 2-year-olds

Around two, most children are just discovering that both feet can leave the floor together. Landings are wobbly, and the jump often happens from a low step or in place rather than forward. At this age, look for episodes where the jumping is slow and clearly shown, with a character bending their knees before hopping and simple words repeated often. Long, steady shots help a toddler follow the movement, and gentle music invites bouncing along at home.

It ends with Eddie feeling ready, cheering 'Ready, Eddie, go!'

For 3-year-olds

By three, jumping becomes something a child does on purpose: over a puddle, off a low ledge, or in a game with rules like hopping to a certain spot. Children this age enjoy counting their jumps and comparing who goes highest, and they can handle a small disappointment when a jump does not work out. Look for episodes where jumping is part of playing together, where a character tries again after a stumble, and where an adult stays nearby without taking over.

After watching a butterfly, Peppa pretends to be one, George wants to join, and Grandpa shows him how to be a wriggly worm. They then spot a frog and decide to play frogs, which means jumping in a big muddy puddle. It ends with everyone splashing together and Peppa declaring she likes frogs the best.

Peppa loses her shoes in the garden, and after the family searches everywhere without luck, Mummy takes her to Miss Rabbit's shoe shop for a new red pair. Peppa loves them so much she keeps them on for her bath and for bed. The next morning the garden is wet and everyone jumps in muddy puddles, but Peppa does not want to spoil her new shoes. She fetches her boots and joins the fun, learning that jumping in puddles means wearing boots.

Mopatop runs a shop full of curious items with his assistant Puppyduck. It is the Hop Holiday, so customers keep popping in to hop while they shop, and a mysterious thumping noise has Mopatop blaming the mice upstairs. The thumping turns out to be Puppyduck, who was unsure about the noisy holiday at first. By the end she is hopping along happily, the holiday closes, and Mopatop shuts up the shop.
