Discomfort

Discomfort is the everyday feeling of something being wrong in the body or the mood: a scraped knee, an itchy sweater, a sore tummy, a wait that lasts too long. Small children meet it constantly and have almost no words for it. A calm, well made story about discomfort shows the feeling being noticed, named and cared for, which hands a child a script to use when it happens to them.

For 2-year-olds

At two, discomfort is almost entirely physical and immediate. Cold, hunger, a bump or being overtired arrives as one big wave of upset with no words attached. Look for stories where the uncomfortable moment is short and clearly caused by something a toddler recognises, where someone notices quickly and says out loud what is happening, and where comfort follows in the same scene. Long stretches of distress are more than a two year old can hold.

A boy named Eddie notices his head is itchy at breakfast, school, and the playground, and two expert characters explain that he has head lice. Across scenes at home, his mum, dad, and grandma check his hair and treat it with special shampoo, spray, conditioner, and a fine-tooth comb. The combing has to be repeated over several days before the lice are finally gone. The episode ends with Eddie itch-free and heading out to play, with a reminder that lice can come back and that he now knows what to do.

On a sweltering day in the puppet town of Someplace Else, Donkey Hodie decides to cool everyone down by opening a lemonade stand with her friend Duck Duck. Duck Duck wants to follow a careful step-by-step plan, but Donkey rushes ahead her own way, grabs an enormous lemon, and ends up with no lemonade and a wrecked stand. Duck Duck is hurt that Donkey did not listen, so Donkey finds her, apologizes, and admits the plan would have worked. Together they follow the plan, make the lemonade, and cool down the whole town.

Pooh Bear's Boo Boo

In a green storybook forest, Winnie the Pooh greets his friend Kanga, then trips and scrapes his knee. Pooh cheers up, decides to start their hello over again, and Kanga surprises him with a honeypot. The two say goodbye until next time.

Tigger Wants to Play All Day

Tigger greets the child and wants to play, but his tail hurts so he cannot bounce. He works out other ways to have fun with a ball, kicking it, rolling it, and inviting the viewer to pretend to play along. When the ball bounces on its own he is thrilled to bounce again without his tail. He ends by thanking the child and waving goodbye until next time.

For 3-year-olds

Three year olds start to connect cause and feeling, and can sit with a bad moment a little longer before it tips over. Discomfort widens here: waiting, an itch that will not stop, a hurt paw, a sore throat, the nerves before something unfamiliar. Look for stories that stay with the uncomfortable part long enough to show the steps that help, checking, cleaning, resting, asking for help, and that give the child words for what the feeling actually is.

Two neighbors are about to enjoy bread with honey when a swarm of bees appears in the garden. They take turns trying to chase the swarm away, first with a sheet, then with a butterfly net, then with makeshift beekeeper veils, getting stung in the process. After regrouping, they decide to build a proper wooden beehive from scratch, bait it with honey, and lure the bees inside. They retreat into the house and finally sit down together to eat their bread and honey.

A tiny caterpillar hatches from an egg and eats through more food each day of the week, then overeats a feast of rich treats on Saturday and gets a stomachache. After eating a green leaf he feels better, grows large, forms a cocoon, and comes out as a butterfly. The host closes with a short note about eating well and an invitation to read more stories.

With help from their dad, the pups try one idea after another to cool down, from finding shade to playing with ice and water. When the ice melts and the water soaks away, they combine a hose and watering cans into a big sprinkler they call the Cool Down Play Zone. They invite every overheated dog in Montgomery to join, and the whole neighborhood cools off and plays together.

The Ambulance

Carl, a truck that can rebuild itself, transforms into a large ambulance and drives out to help. He reaches Tom, the yellow tow truck, takes his temperature, checks his throat and listens to his cough, then tells him he has a slight fever from working too hard. Tom is told to rest, thanks Carl, and the two say goodbye.
