Leadership

Leadership for young children is not about being in charge. It is about noticing when someone needs help, speaking up with an idea, and taking responsibility when a group has to get something done together. A calm, well-made series can show what that looks like in practice, so a child sees leading as listening and helping rather than bossing.

For 5-year-olds

Five-year-olds start to make plans out loud, and they notice when a plan does not work. This is the age where a child can watch someone take charge, get it wrong, and try again, and understand both halves. Look for a series where the character with the idea also listens to others, asks questions, and adjusts. It helps when the story shows the thinking, not just the outcome, so your child hears how a decision gets made.

Rosie Fuentes decides to make her own movie at home and takes on the role of director. She casts her younger brother as the camera operator and the family cat in a costumed part, then acts out a pretend detective story with hats, glasses and a treasure prop. When takes do not go to plan, Rosie keeps adjusting her ideas until the film is finished. The episode ends with the family watching the completed movie together on their TV.

For 6-year-olds

By six, friendships have their own politics: who decides, who gets left out, who gives in. A six-year-old can handle a story where leading means dealing with disagreement, sharing credit, or stepping back so someone else can try. Look for a series with real friction between characters that gets talked through rather than smoothed over. Stories where a leader admits a mistake give your child language for the same moments on the playground.

Pinecone, who idolises her town's founder Frida the Fierce, is chosen to lead her friends in a group song for the festival honouring Frida. Believing a leader has to be 'fierce', she bosses everyone around until her friends leave to do their own presentations. In her attic she meets Frida's ghost, who reveals she never punched buildings into being but united the town by listening and combining everyone's ideas. Pinecone apologises, reunites the group, and they perform a song they wrote together about a place built on everyone's voice.

Craig, JP and Kelsey head into the storm sewers to map them for the self-styled Sewer Queen, a kid who leads a group of children playing underground. When the queen goes missing after losing her glasses, the panicked kids turn to Craig, who charges off to lead the search and lands everyone in a trap. He stops, admits he rushed in without a plan, and reasons out how to drain the flooded chamber back to the creek. The group finds the queen pinned under a car, frees her together, and heads off for a snack.
