Brushing hair

Hair brushing is one of those small daily routines that can go smoothly one morning and turn into a struggle the next. For young children it touches on body awareness, tolerating sensations they cannot see, and slowly taking over a task an adult used to do for them. A calm episode that shows brushing as an ordinary, unhurried part of the day gives children a chance to recognise the moment without any pressure attached to it.

For 2-year-olds

At two, hair brushing is mostly something that happens to a child rather than something they do. Tugs and knots feel surprising, and sitting still is genuinely hard. What helps at this age is watching a familiar character go through the routine with a warm adult nearby, in soft images and a slow rhythm, so the child can predict what comes next. Look for episodes where the brushing is part of an everyday moment, not a problem to be fixed, and where the child on screen is allowed to wriggle.

For 5-year-olds

Five-year-olds are curious about why: why hair tangles, why it grows, why everyone's looks different. They can also manage the brush themselves for stretches, though the back of the head still needs help. Episodes that answer real questions in plain language, with clear pictures and time to take the explanation in, feed that curiosity without overwhelming it. Hair also becomes a way of noticing that people look different from one another, and a calm episode can make those differences feel completely ordinary.
