Kindness

Kindness is one of the first big ideas a child can actually practise. Long before they can explain it, children learn it by watching someone notice another person's feelings and do something about it. A calm, well-made series gives them that in a form they can follow: a small moment of care, slow enough to take in, warm enough to want to copy.

For 2-year-olds

At two, kindness is almost entirely imitation. A toddler sees someone pat a friend who is crying, or hand over a blanket, and files it away as something people do. Feelings are still bigger than words at this stage, so what lands is the gesture itself and the soft voice that goes with it. Look for stories with one clear kind act, plenty of quiet around it, and faces the child can read easily.

By four, kindness begins to cost something. Giving up the last turn, saying sorry and meaning it, choosing a friend's idea over your own: these are real decisions now, and children this age can follow a story built around one. Look for episodes where being kind is a little hard and the character does it anyway. Seeing a character get it wrong first, then repair it, is just as useful as seeing it go smoothly.
