Swimming lessons

Swimming lessons are often one of the first things a child does with a parent watching from the side instead of holding on: a new pool, a new voice giving instructions, water that feels cold and loud. Stories about water and learning to swim let a child meet all of that from the safety of the couch first. A calm, well made episode gives them the pictures and the words to bring along to the real thing.

For 3-year-olds

At three, water is mostly a feeling: splashing, a wet face, the odd shiver. A child this age is not working on strokes yet, they are learning that water can be fun and that a grown-up stays close. Look for episodes where the pace stays slow and nobody is pushed, and where getting wet is play rather than a task to complete. Bath tubs, puddles and shallow paddling do more here than anything happening in a real pool.
