Climbing
Climbing is one of the first big physical adventures a young child takes on. Pulling up onto a step, scrambling over a log or working out how to get back down again teaches balance, planning and trust in their own body. A calm, well made series about climbing gives children the language and the confidence for that, and shows them that taking your time on the way up is part of it.
For 2-year-olds
At two, climbing is mostly about getting onto things: a low step, a chair, the edge of a sofa. The pull is strong and the judgment is not there yet, so a grown-up stays close by. Look for a series where climbing appears in small everyday moments rather than as a stunt, with unhurried images so a toddler can actually follow how a body moves up and over something.

With Flop's patience, and after watching Pando and the toy Hoppity Voosh go down first, Bing slides down himself and enjoys it. Barney points out how much he has helped, and David decides on his own to head home to his sister, ending with the group singing together.
For 3-year-olds
Three year olds want height, and often discover that coming down is harder than going up. That gap is where frustration and calls for help live. A helpful series shows a character pausing halfway, asking for a hand and trying again, with an adult who stays nearby without lifting them off. Simple, repeated words for what the body is doing, holding on, stepping down, reaching, give a child something to use in the moment.

Leia passes, and Izzy, though sad to say goodbye, decides her best friend is ready to go home.
For 4-year-olds
By four, climbing turns social and imaginative: a climbing frame becomes a ship, a low branch becomes a lookout. Children start testing what they can manage and take turns waiting for each other. Look for stories where the characters plan a climb together, talk about who goes first, and where slipping or backing out is treated as ordinary rather than dramatic. That gives a child a model for judging their own limits out loud.

For 5-year-olds
Five year olds climb with a purpose in mind: reaching a view, fetching something, following a trail up a hillside. They can now hear a reason behind a rule instead of just the rule itself. Series set in real landscapes work well here, especially when a character checks a foothold, thinks about the weather or decides a route is not worth it. Seeing an adult trust a child with a real choice matters just as much.

For 6-year-olds
At six, the interesting part is persistence and nerve. A climb can take several tries, and a child this age can hold onto a goal across a whole story. Look for series where the character names the fear out loud, breaks the route into steps, or helps someone else past a tricky bit. Some attention to technique and safety, checking a grip, taking the sensible line, connects directly to the real climbing they are doing outside.
