Flying
Flying is one of the first big ideas a child meets: birds lifting off a branch, a plane crossing the sky, a made-up creature carrying someone over the treetops. It sits right between something they can see out the window and something they can only imagine, which is exactly why it holds their attention. A calm, well-made story about flying gives a child time to look, wonder how it works, and try the idea out in their own play afterwards.
For 2-year-olds
At two, flying is mostly a picture and a sound: wings opening, something going up, something coming down. Toddlers are still learning that things exist when they leave the ground, so the pleasure is in watching it happen again and again. Look for a story that stays slow, shows the take-off clearly, and names what is happening in simple words. Anything with quick cuts or a busy sky pulls the moment apart before a two-year-old has caught it.

For 3-year-olds
Three-year-olds start asking how and why. They notice that birds have wings and they do not, and they begin sorting real flying from pretend flying without much certainty yet. A good story at this age keeps a simple line from start to finish: someone wants to get up in the air, tries, and manages it. Fantastical flying is fine here, as long as the story is warm and clear rather than tense, since a three-year-old still reads danger in the air as danger.

For 4-year-olds
By four, flying becomes something to think with. Children invent their own flying machines, give their toys wings, and enjoy the idea of seeing the world from above. They also handle a bit more plot: a problem in the air that needs solving, a friend who needs help getting down. Look for a story where the child character does the figuring out rather than being rescued, and where the flying serves the adventure instead of just filling the screen with speed.

For 5-year-olds
Five-year-olds can hold real facts and imagined worlds side by side and enjoy both. They like knowing that birds migrate or that wings push against air, and they equally like a story where flying is simply possible. This is a good age for stories that go somewhere with it: a journey, a rescue, a friendship tested at height. Some tension is manageable now, as long as it resolves within the story and the characters talk about how they felt afterwards.

For 6-year-olds
At six, curiosity turns practical. Children want to know what actually keeps something in the air, which animals fly and how far, and whether people could do it without machines. Stories that treat flying as something to investigate, with real observation and a question worth answering, land well now. A six-year-old can also follow a longer arc across several scenes, so a story that builds toward one discovery gives more than a series of short flights.
