Magic trick

Magic tricks are about wonder and surprise: something disappears, something changes, and a child's world tilts for a second. For young children this sits right where curiosity begins, the urge to ask how and to look again more closely. A calm, well-made show about magic gives them that spark without overwhelming them, and often hands them the secret afterwards so the surprise turns into something they can try themselves.

For 2-year-olds

At two, magic is simply surprise. A scarf that vanishes and comes back is the same pleasure as peekaboo, and the child does not yet separate a trick from something genuinely impossible. Look for slow reveals, plenty of quiet before and after the surprise, and a warm presenter who repeats the moment so the toddler can anticipate it. Sudden bangs, flashes or loud reaction music turn delight into a startle at this age.

Bumba and his circus friends spend the episode playing inside a striped green arena. Zinzi and Bumba kick a football together, a fuzzy worm rolls a tiny ball past them, and a parade of differently sized balls is named one by one. Zazati conjures a kangaroo, Gwido the penguin pops a red balloon, Bumba and Bumbina build a tower of coloured blocks, and the elephant Bumbum carries a small child on his back before the closing credits roll.

Three, the yellow block character, performs four short magic tricks for her friends One and Two using apples: a find-the-apple cup game, an apple-on-top balance game, a surprise reveal that shows '1 + 2 = 3', and a final trick that makes the apple cores grow into three new trees. The action takes place outdoors on a grassy hill with a few simple props. Along the way the characters introduce counting to three, the words 'first', 'second' and 'third', and the ideas of bigger and smaller. The episode ends with Three sharing the new apples so all three friends have some.

Stanley the dragon prepares a one-dragon show in the park and insists on performing every act by himself. When the orchestra, the magic trick, and a dramatic chicken scene each go wrong, his friend Donkey Hodie and others, Harriet and DuckDuck, coach him through them step by step. Stanley discovers that some problems need help and finishes the full show to a puppet audience's applause. He thanks each friend by name before the closing credits.

For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds start asking where it went. They can hold an object in mind after it disappears, so a trick becomes a small question rather than pure sensation. Shows that pause on that question, then show the answer, suit this stage well. Watch for a friendly tone over a showy one: at three, a performer who teases or keeps the child guessing too long tips into frustration instead of curiosity.

Monkey the Magnificent

George watches a young magician named Marco perform a reappearing-rabbit trick and decides he wants to learn it. Marco teaches him five steps written on cards, and George practises with a dog and then a pigeon before performing at Marco's afternoon show. When his cards fall out of order and the trick goes wrong in front of the crowd, George recalls the missed step and numbers his cards with fruit so they stay in sequence. He completes the trick and is invited to become a regular part of the act.

Buzzbee the Magician

Buzzbee the bee finds his Papa's magic hat and, after failing to make real magic happen, learns it works through a hidden secret door. He proudly puts on a show for his friends, but his big sister Ruby gives away the secret and he shouts at her before she leaves. Buzzbee fears his wish made her disappear, then Ruby returns with a gift and an apology. The siblings make up and perform a new trick together with their baby sister and some honey cake.

Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom

The Lost Egg

Ben the elf and Holly the fairy princess find a stray egg while playing and set out to return it to its mother. With Nanny Plum's guidance they learn it is a blackbird's egg, build a nest, and have King Thistle keep it warm until it hatches. The chick imprints on Nanny and grows hungry, so the group tries to charm worms and call the mother bird. The mummy blackbird finally arrives and takes her chick home.

For 4-year-olds

Four is when a child wants to do the trick, not just watch it. They can follow two or three steps and love the feeling of knowing something the audience does not. Look for shows that break the trick into clear stages with everyday materials, cups, cards, paper, so it can be copied at the kitchen table. Practising and getting it wrong is part of the appeal here, and a series that shows a fumble is more useful than one where everything works first time.

Wayne of Wonder

Wayne, a window washer, decides he wants to become a magician but does not know a single trick. The helpsters, a group of problem-solving monsters, make a three-step plan: find a magician, watch a trick, and learn to do it. They meet Dazzling Deandra at a laundromat, who teaches them about patterns and performs the Tube of Wonder before disappearing. By working out the hidden steps together, Wayne performs the trick himself and is invited to join Deandra's show.

For 6-year-olds

Six-year-olds enjoy taking magic apart. They can reason about how an effect was achieved, spot the setup, and appreciate the practice and craft behind a smooth performance. Look for shows that connect tricks to something real, physics, sleight of hand, the history of famous performers, and that reward patience over instant results. At this age a series can also make room for the flip side, how easily eyes and attention are fooled, which is a useful thing to learn while it is still a game.

Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum

Brad is nervous about spending his first whole night in the museum, so Xavier and Yadina take him through the Secret Museum back to 1881 Wisconsin to meet young Harry Houdini. Houdini wants to become a brave performer like a fearless tightrope walker, and learns to take a slow, deep breath to calm himself before doing something scary. The friends bring the technique home and Brad uses it to settle his fear and stay the night. A short bonus story about Bradman and Furby and a secret garden follows before the credits.

Oh Noah!

Hop, Look, and Listen

Noah puts on a magic show and wants to pull a rabbit from his top hat, so he asks his friend Coco how to say rabbit in Spanish. Coco offers several wrong words, and a grasshopper, a frog and then a kangaroo appear instead. Noah chases the bouncing kangaroo through the neighborhood and, with a pogo stick from Senora Martinez, finally catches it. Coco then gives him the right word, 'conejo', and Noah thanks her.
