Navigating

Navigating is about finding your way: knowing which turn leads home, following a path, working out where you are. For young children it starts small, with noticing landmarks and using words like behind, next to and around. A calm, well-made story about getting from one place to another gives a child time to follow the route themselves instead of watching the world rush past.

For 4-year-olds

At four, a child can hold a short route in mind and say it out loud, and simple maps start to make sense. This is the age for planning: which way first, what happens when the usual path is blocked, how to tell someone else where to go. Look for a story that shows the choice being made, with a character pausing to think about the way, rather than arriving straight away. A detour worked out step by step gives a child something to reason along with.

Axle, Zack and the Construction Zerbies build a ramp that can launch Axle over both a tree branch and a mud puddle. Their first two tries fall short, one too low and one too steep, until they study both ramps and build one with a shape in between that works. In the second story, Zack and Rex try to be the first to solve Zerby Town's maze, get lost on the way out, and finally mark their path with a trail of rocks to find the exit. Both stories play out among toy cars in a real forest.

A personified letter M is sad because he has lost his mama, and a friendly narrator invites children to help him find her. Together they trace the letter M, choose the path shaped like M, cross a stream on M stones, and climb hills to the house marked with M. Letter M is reunited with Mama M, who shares her cooking, and the friends take the leftovers to share with the other letters. The episode closes with a channel subscribe message, a credits roll, and a short song featuring Akili and her animal friends.
