This program is stimulating. It actively demands attention and can feel intense. For the recommended age, this may be on the more intense side. The pacing is fast. Images follow each other quickly, leaving little time to pause and take in what is happening. The sound is clearly present and regularly draws attention. The visuals are calm and well-organized.

The episode is a long string of separate food gags rather than one story. Joey and Boo chase a crumb, then they are inside a watermelon, then on a picnic blanket with cupcakes, then facing a beetle in the grass, with no bridge between the situations. Within a single gag the build-up is readable: one ant spots something sweet, tries something, it goes wrong, and the outcome follows from what he did. Because a fresh situation keeps starting, a child has to let go of one thread and pick up a new one over and over.

Cheer flips into fright and back again constantly. The ants celebrate a find, then the ground gives way, a beetle charges, or a spider web traps them, and their faces go wide-eyed with panic while loud impact sounds land. There is almost no spoken language. The ants communicate in exclamations: 'Whoa!', 'Booyah!', 'Yummy!', 'Genius!' and a recurring 'Let's do this!'. Nearly everything the ants do is scaled to ant life and cannot be copied off screen: riding a floating bubble, launching from a slingshot, surfing a spoon across a bowl of yoghurt. The objects around them are recognisable from a real picnic, watermelon, cupcakes, grapes, a tub of crisps, a strawberry, so the everyday world is visible, just at insect size. The friendship between Joey and Boo does read like a real pair of playmates who share, compete and pull each other back up. What stays thin is the practical side: the goal is always food, and the route to it is a stunt.

Nobody is set up as a bad guy; the trouble always comes from the food being too big, too slippery or too far away. The playful, near wordless slapstick and the familiar garden setting sit comfortably with what four to six year olds can place.

Joey and Boo chase food and fail spectacularly, told almost entirely through physical comedy with barely a word of dialogue. That makes it easy to have on in the room: no shrill voices, no song stuck on repeat, and clean, colourful animation with real craft behind it. The catch is that the formula rarely changes, so spot a treat, build a contraption, watch it collapse, repeat, and the fun for the grown-up on the couch runs thin well before the end. You get the occasional well timed pratfall that works at any age, but nothing written over the children's heads for you.
