Friendship

Friendship is one of the first big social projects of childhood. Children learn to share, take turns, read another person's face, repair a fight and hold a bond that survives disagreement. A calm, well-made series about friendship gives them a safe place to watch these moments unfold slowly enough to follow, and often gives you the words to talk about their own playground day afterwards.

For 2-year-olds

At two, friendship is mostly playing side by side rather than together. A child recognises familiar faces, copies what another child does and is only beginning to notice that someone else can be sad or happy. Look for stories with a few characters, plenty of repetition and simple moments of being kind: handing something over, waiting a turn, a warm goodbye. Conflict at this age should stay very small and resolve quickly.

For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds start to want a friend on purpose, and that brings the first real friction: toys everyone wants, plans that clash, feelings that arrive faster than words. This is the age where naming emotions helps enormously. Look for series that slow down at the moment things go wrong and show a character saying how they feel, then finding a way forward. Predictable, everyday situations work better than big adventures.

For 4-year-olds

By four, friendship has rules, and children test them constantly: who is invited, who decides the game, what counts as fair. They are practising negotiation and starting to imagine what another child wants. Look for stories where characters disagree, work it out and stay friends afterwards, showing that a fight does not end a friendship. Some humour and pretend play helps, as long as the emotional thread stays easy to follow.

For 5-year-olds

Five-year-olds care deeply about being included and can feel exclusion sharply. They start to hold longer friendships, notice loyalty and jealousy, and can talk through a problem instead of only acting on it. Look for series with slightly bigger stories where friends have different skills and need each other, and where an apology carries some weight. Watching characters solve something together gives your child a model for group play.

For 6-year-olds

At six, friendship becomes about trust, fairness and belonging to a group. Children begin to see that a friend can have a different opinion and still be a good friend, and they are sensitive to teasing and being left out. Look for stories with real narrative depth: friends who make mistakes, feel embarrassed or jealous, and repair things themselves. At this age, a series can carry more nuance without needing an adult to explain the ending.
