They can follow a short instruction and answer a direct question, but their attention still slips the moment something more interesting appears. Helpful episodes ask the child something and then genuinely pause, or repeat a phrase until it becomes familiar. Watch for stories where a character listens to a friend and changes course because of it, since that shows listening as something useful rather than something adults demand.

By four, a child can hold a longer thread and notice when someone is not being heard. This is the age where interrupting, talking over a friend, and missing the point start to matter socially. Look for episodes where characters work something out together, where a misunderstanding comes from not listening properly and gets repaired in the story. A plot with a few steps is fine now, as long as the dialogue is clear enough that your child can follow who wants what.

Five-year-olds can listen for detail: instructions with several parts, a plan they have to remember, a hint that matters later. They also start listening to tone, picking up when a friend sounds upset rather than only what the words say. Episodes that reward attention work well here, where a small thing said early turns out to matter at the end. Look for characters who ask questions back and check whether they understood, which is exactly the habit a child needs before school.
