Jumping

Jumping is one of the first big physical things a young child chooses to do with their own body. It takes balance, courage and a lot of practice, and children repeat it hundreds of times before it feels easy. A calm, well-made episode about jumping gives your child a chance to watch that effort unfold, recognise the wobble and the landing, and carry the excitement back into the room without being wound up by it.

For 2-year-olds

At two, getting both feet off the ground at once is still new. Most toddlers bounce on the spot, bend their knees and step down from a low edge before a real jump arrives. Look for episodes with slow, clear movement, where you can actually see a character crouch, push off and land, and where the moment is repeated rather than rushed past. Simple, quiet stories work best here, since your child is watching the body, not the plot.

At this age look for episodes where jumping is playful and shared with a friend, and where a stumble is met calmly instead of turned into drama. Predictable rhythms and small repeated actions give your child something to copy safely on your living room floor.

Nico blames Chip and the friends fall out, leaving Chip guilty and unsure if they are still best friends. She goes home, talks it over with her mama, and brings Nico a 'sorry' cake, but he is already asleep, so she resolves to make up with him the next day.

The thumping turns out to be Puppyduck, who was unsure about the noisy holiday at first. By the end she is hopping along happily, the holiday closes, and Mopatop shuts up the shop.

Meekah Flips on a Trampoline at Skyzone

By four, jumping turns into a challenge a child sets for themselves: further, higher, over something. There is real pride in landing it and real disappointment in missing. Stories that show a character trying, failing and trying again, without making the failure a big deal, match what your child is working through. Also worth noticing is whether the episode shows sensible limits, a friend or grown-up saying which jump is a good idea and which one is not.

When the boots are banned he finds he can jump without them, wins the contest, and the story sends Lucy happily off to bed.

At six, jumping is social. It happens in groups, with dares, tricks, ropes and an audience, and the question shifts from can I to should I. Children this age are learning to judge a risk before they take it. Look for stories where a character weighs up a jump, changes their mind or asks for help, and where nerves are handled by the group without teasing. That kind of episode gives your child language for the moments they hesitate.
