Storytelling
Storytelling is how a child learns that events connect: something happens, someone responds, and it leads somewhere. Long before they can read, children build this sense by watching stories unfold with a clear beginning, middle and end. A calm, carefully made series gives them time to follow the thread, hold characters in mind, and carry that structure into their own play and talk.
For 2-year-olds
At two, a story is mostly a sequence of familiar moments: getting dressed, losing a toy, finding it again. Toddlers hold only a few things in mind at once, so they follow best when one thing happens at a time and the same beats return. Look for a single simple thread, a small cast, and plenty of quiet between events. Repetition is the point here, not a shortcut. Hearing the same story again is how a two-year-old learns what comes next.

For 3-year-olds
Three-year-olds start to sense that a story has a shape. They notice someone wants something, runs into a snag, and gets there in the end. This is the age of asking 'and then?' and of retelling parts of a story in their own words, often out of order. Look for a small, clear problem that is solved within the episode, and characters whose feelings are said out loud. When the reason for each step is easy to see, a child can follow the whole arc.

For 4-year-olds
By four, children predict. They guess what a character will do next, and they enjoy being right almost as much as being surprised. They begin to grasp that characters act because of what they want or feel, not just because things happen to them. Small twists and a bit of humour work well now, as long as the main thread stays easy to hold.
