Behaviour
Decision making
Decision making is how a child learns to weigh a choice and live with what follows. For young children it starts small, picking a snack, choosing who to play with, deciding whether to tell the truth. A calm, well-made series can show that process slowly enough for a child to follow it, so the thinking becomes visible instead of hidden behind a quick answer.
For 2-year-olds
At two, choosing is still mostly about wanting. A toddler can pick between two things held up in front of them, but cannot hold several options in mind or imagine what happens next. Look for stories where a character makes one simple, visible choice and the result follows right away, with plenty of quiet space around it. Characters who name what they want out loud help, because your child is learning the words for preference before the reasoning.

For 3-year-olds
Three-year-olds start to notice that a choice has a consequence, though they often discover it only after the fact. They test what happens when they refuse, share, or grab. Stories that show a small everyday dilemma, then the outcome, then a chance to try again, match this stage well. Repeated routines are useful here: when the same situation returns, your child recognises it and begins to predict what the character will do.

For 4-year-olds
By four, a child can pause and consider before acting, at least sometimes. They compare options, weigh what a friend wants against what they want, and start to explain their reasoning out loud. Look for stories where a character openly hesitates, thinks it through, and says why, rather than simply doing the right thing. Choices with a real cost, giving something up, waiting, admitting a mistake, give your child something worth talking about afterwards.

For 5-year-olds
Five-year-olds can hold a plan in mind and adjust it when it stops working. They understand that a decision made early can shape how the whole day goes, and they care about fairness. Stories that follow a choice through several steps suit this age, especially when a character has to change course halfway. Watch for moments where a decision turns out badly and the character owns it, which teaches more than a choice that always lands right.
