Behaviour
Including others
Including others is one of the first social skills a child practises for real: noticing someone standing at the edge, making room, saying come play. It is small work, and it is hard work. A calm, well-made series can show that moment slowly enough for a child to see it happen, name the feeling of being left out, and watch someone make it right without anyone being scolded for getting it wrong first.
For 2-year-olds
At two, playing near another child already counts as playing together. Your toddler is only beginning to grasp that other people want things too, so including someone looks like handing over a block or shuffling sideways to make space. Look for stories with few characters, unhurried scenes, and one clear invitation that is repeated often enough to sink in. Words matter less here than the picture: a hand reaching out, a circle opening up.

For 3-year-olds
Three-year-olds want to join in but often lack the words, so they hover nearby or push their way in. This is also the age when being left out starts to sting and can be named out loud. Helpful stories keep the group small, show a character asking to join and hearing a plain yes, and give feelings a simple label like sad or lonely. Repeated routines let your child predict what comes next and practise the line themselves.

For 4-year-olds
By four, friendships have favourites, and you can play with us turns into a decision children make on purpose. Exclusion appears here as a real social move, not an accident. Look for stories where someone gets left out, the hurt is shown honestly, and the repair comes from the children rather than an adult stepping in with the answer. Seeing a character notice their own mistake and fix it is more useful now than seeing perfect behaviour.

For 5-year-olds
Five-year-olds understand that including someone can cost them something: a turn, a role, the rules of the game they already agreed on. That trade-off is the real lesson at this age. Good stories show a group bending its own rules so a quieter or slower friend can play, and let the character weigh it up rather than obey. Look for talk about fairness, plans made together, and characters who imagine how the other one feels.
