Caring for others
Caring for others starts small: noticing when someone is sad, sharing a toy, checking on a friend who fell. Young children learn this by watching it happen around them, again and again, in ordinary moments. A calm, well-made series can show that kindness in slow motion, giving a child time to see the feeling, the choice, and what happens next.
For 2-year-olds
At two, caring is mostly imitation. Your toddler notices a hug, a blanket tucked in, a soft voice, and copies it long before understanding why. Look for stories where affection is simple and physical, with very few characters and plenty of quiet. The best ones stay close to home: a parent comforting a little one, a friend waiting patiently, the same warm routine returning every time. Nothing needs to be explained; it just needs to be seen clearly.

For 3-year-olds
Three-year-olds start to spot that other people feel things too, though their own feelings still come first. Stories help most when a small problem is named out loud, someone helps, and the moment lands: a scraped knee, a lost toy, a friend left out. Look for series where the caring is done by children or animal characters the child can identify with, and where the upset is resolved within the episode. Repetition matters here; the same kindness in a new situation is how the idea sticks.

For 4-year-olds
At four, children can imagine what someone else is feeling and start choosing to help without being asked. Stories that give a character a real job, looking after a pet, fixing something for a friend, checking on someone who is hurt, match that new sense of capability. Watch for episodes where the helper has to notice the need themselves rather than being told, and where helping takes a bit of effort. This is also the age where a child can see that caring sometimes means giving something up.

For 5-year-olds
Five-year-olds understand that people can hide how they feel, and that caring means paying attention. Look for stories with more social texture: friendships that wobble, someone left out, a character who needs help but does not ask for it. At this age a child can follow a longer arc where a misunderstanding is repaired, and can handle a character being unkind before making it right. Caring for animals, younger siblings and the wider world also becomes concrete and interesting now.

For 6-year-olds
By six, caring extends beyond the people right in front of them, to a neighbourhood, a community, a group with rules of its own. Stories can be more layered here: loyalty that costs something, a friend who is wrong, a choice between what is easy and what is fair. Look for series that let characters work it out themselves, with adults in the background rather than solving it. A six-year-old can hold the idea that caring is sometimes uncomfortable, and still worth doing.
