Siblings
Brothers and sisters are a child's first daily practice in sharing space, attention and time. A story about siblings puts words and pictures to feelings that are hard to explain at home: pride, jealousy, comfort, irritation. When the pace is calm and conflicts are worked out with care, a child can follow the whole arc, recognise themselves in it, and borrow ideas for their own room.
For 2-year-olds
At two, a sibling is mostly the person who is simply there: in the same room, reaching for the same cup. Sharing is not yet possible, and 'mine' is honest rather than unkind. Look for short, repeating scenes built around everyday moments, a familiar home, and a grown-up close by who helps. Toddlers take in a brother or sister through routine and repetition, not through plot.

For 3-year-olds
Three-year-olds start to notice that attention gets divided, and that a sibling can be a playmate and a rival within the same afternoon. Turn-taking is new and fragile, so look for stories where waiting is shown as something a child can survive, and where a small argument is over quickly. It helps when the older or younger one has real feelings too, instead of being only a nuisance.

For 4-year-olds
By four, playing with a brother or sister becomes shared invention: roles, rules, and a game that has to keep working for both. Fairness matters intensely at this age, and so does teasing. Choose stories where siblings sort things out themselves at least part of the time, and where the apology or the making up is actually shown, not skipped over between scenes.

For 5-year-olds
Five-year-olds compare themselves constantly: who is faster, who is allowed more, who gets to go first. A sibling is both a measuring stick and an ally. Children this age can follow a longer thread, so look for stories where a brother or sister is genuinely needed to solve something, and where the younger one is brought along instead of left behind.

For 6-year-olds
At six, a sibling relationship carries history: old jokes, old grudges, and loyalty that shows up when it counts. Children this age can hold two viewpoints at once and grasp that the other one had reasons. Longer story arcs suit them now, especially ones where siblings negotiate, keep a promise, or stand up for each other, and where teasing stays affectionate rather than sharp.
