Party planning

Party planning is one of the first big projects a young child ever takes on. A birthday, a surprise or a small celebration for a friend asks a child to think ahead, imagine how someone else will feel, and handle the gap between the plan in their head and what actually happens. A calm, well made series about it gives children a picture of how celebrations come together, and words for the excitement and the letdowns that come with them.

For 2-year-olds

At two, a party is mostly a set of familiar things: a cake, candles, balloons, a song everyone knows. Your child is not planning anything yet, they are learning what a celebration looks and sounds like. Look for episodes that stay with those simple objects and rituals, name them clearly, and repeat the same happy sequence. Slow scenes and a predictable song let a two year old join in from the couch instead of just watching.

For 3-year-olds

Three year olds want to help. Carrying plates, sticking paper on a card, hiding a present behind their back: doing something for someone else is new and exciting, and waiting for the party to start is genuinely hard. Episodes that show preparation step by step, with grown ups or older children giving small jobs, match this stage well. It also helps when the story lets a character be impatient or spill something without the celebration falling apart.

A family of dachshunds in the dog city of Montgomery learns at breakfast that their city is turning 100 today. The pups decide to throw a surprise birthday party and set about gathering decorations, ordering treats from Kibble Market and finding a place big enough. When they realise they forgot to invite any guests, they run through the streets calling everyone to come. The celebration turns into a city-wide parade, ending with the birthday song for Montgomery.

For 4-year-olds

By four, children start making the plan themselves. They decide on a theme, choose who to invite, and picture the whole day in advance, which is exactly why it stings when a detail goes wrong. Useful episodes show a character thinking through the steps out loud and then adjusting when the weather, a missing item or another person's wish changes things. Watch for stories where the party still works out differently than imagined, and that turns out to be fine.

For 5-year-olds

Five year olds plan together, and that is where the real work sits: agreeing on ideas, splitting jobs, and noticing that the person the party is for might want something else entirely. Feelings about being the centre of attention, or not being, become sharp at this age. Look for episodes that give room to negotiation, to somebody feeling left out, and to a character who has to give up their favourite idea for the group. Repair matters more than the party itself.

For 6-year-olds

At six, children can hold a whole project in their head: a guest list, a budget of sorts, a secret to keep, a schedule that has to work. They also feel the weight of hosting, wanting everyone to have a good time and quietly worrying it will flop. Episodes worth watching here let the plan get genuinely complicated, with setbacks that need real problem solving. Stories where a child fixes a mistake themselves, or apologises for one, land well at this stage.
