Comforting
Comforting is about the moment a child feels bad and someone stays close: a scraped knee, a lost toy, a sad friend, a night that feels too dark. Children learn to give and receive comfort by watching it happen again and again in small, ordinary ways. A calm, well-made series shows the whole arc, the upset, the staying near, the settling down, so a child can recognise it in their own life.
For 2-year-olds
At two, comfort is mostly physical and immediate: a lap, a hug, a familiar voice saying the feeling has a name. Toddlers cannot yet talk themselves out of distress, so they borrow calm from the grown-up beside them. Look for stories where an upset is small and the response is quick, with plenty of quiet time afterwards instead of a jump to the next event. Repeated routines, the same bedtime, the same soothing phrase, help a toddler predict that the bad feeling ends.

For 3-year-olds
Three-year-olds start putting words to what hurts, though the feelings still arrive faster than the words. This is the age of the comfort object and the endless retelling of the moment something went wrong. Helpful stories name the feeling out loud, let the character stay sad for a beat, and show an adult or friend who waits rather than fixes. Watch for gentle sound and a slow return to play, so your child sees that upset is survivable.

For 5-year-olds
At five, comfort becomes something a child can offer on purpose, and the sources of distress widen: friendship trouble, fear of getting things wrong, worry about things far from home. Children this age can hold a feeling long enough to think about it. Nuance matters now, including characters who get comforting wrong before getting it right.

Six-year-olds understand that someone can look fine and still feel bad, and they start choosing whether to reach out. Loyalty, exclusion and unfairness carry real weight at this age. Some tension is fine here, as long as the series returns to safety and lets the comfort come from the children themselves as much as from adults.
