Social theme
Supporting a friend
Supporting a friend is one of the first big social skills children practise: noticing that someone else feels sad, left out or stuck, and doing something about it. It asks a child to look outward at a moment when their own feelings are still loud. Stories that show this clearly, at a pace a child can follow, give them words and small actions they can borrow in real life.
For 2-year-olds
At two, a child is only beginning to notice that other people have feelings of their own. Comfort is mostly physical: handing over a toy, patting a back, standing close. Look for simple stories where one character is upset and another responds in a way a toddler can see and copy, with clear faces, few characters and plenty of time to take the moment in. Anything more complicated will pass a two-year-old by.

For 3-year-olds
Three-year-olds start naming feelings, though their own still come first. They can recognise sad, angry and scared in a friend, and they like knowing what to do next. Helpful stories at this age keep the problem small and solvable: someone loses something, someone cannot reach, someone is left waiting. What matters is that helping is shown as an ordinary choice rather than a lesson, and that the friend's relief is visible at the end.

For 4-year-olds
By four, children can imagine how something feels for someone else, even when they would feel differently themselves. They also start noticing when a friend is left out, which is often a harder problem than a scraped knee. Seeing that hesitation, and then the decision, is what makes it useful.
