Taking turns

Taking turns is one of the first social skills a young child works on, and it is harder than it looks. Waiting means holding on to a wish while someone else has the toy, the ball, or the attention. A calm, well made series can show that whole moment, the wanting, the waiting, and the relief when the turn finally comes, in a way a child can watch without being in the middle of it.

For 2-year-olds

At two, turn taking starts in the body, not in the rules. A child hands something over, gets it back, and slowly learns that giving does not mean losing. Waiting more than a few seconds is still genuinely difficult, and grabbing is normal. Look for a series with slow, clear back and forth: one character does something, then the other, with plenty of pause in between. A warm adult or older friend nearby who guides the exchange helps more than any lesson.

Bing, a young rabbit, and his friend Pando find a new climbing frame at the park with steps, a tippy tunnel, a rope ladder and a wobbly bridge. At the top, Bing is scared of the very high slide and tells his carer Flop he does not like it. With Flop's patience, and after watching Pando and the toy Hoppity Voosh go down first, Bing slides down himself and enjoys it. He ends by recapping that when you are scared, you can watch someone else try first.

For 3-year-olds

Three year olds understand the idea of a turn but feel the wait strongly. Ownership matters intensely, and 'mine' is a real emotion rather than bad manners. At this age it helps when a series names the feeling out loud, shows a character being disappointed, and then shows the turn actually arriving. Simple, visible solutions work best: counting, a song while waiting, or trading one thing for another. Stories where the wait pays off teach more than stories where sharing is instant.

For 4-year-olds

By four, turn taking moves into group play with rules, teams, and a growing sense of fairness. Children argue about who went first and whether someone skipped ahead, and they can begin to sort it out themselves. Look for a series where characters negotiate, propose a system, and sometimes get it wrong before landing on something everyone accepts. Stories that let a child notice how a friend feels while waiting, not just what the rule says, give the most to work with at this age.
